The Ontario government did away with paper renewal notices for driver’s licenses and health cards in 2022. As a result, we have seen more drivers get notices from their insurance companies telling them that they have an expired license than ever before.
Why Did the Government Stop Paper Renewal Notices?
The Ontario Government has stated that stopping the paper renewal process will save the government $29 million over five years in postage and mailing costs.
They have also expanded and improved their digital offerings in addition to stopping the paper renewals. You can renew your driver’s license or health card online.
Can I Still Get Reminders?
Yes! You can still get reminders when your license or health card are going to expire, but the reminders are now digital, and you have to sign up for the service.
If you want digital reminders, you can sign up online for free. You can get reminders by email, text message, or phone call 60 and 30 days before your expiry date.
My License is Already Expired
If you just checked your driver’s license and you see that it is expired, you still have some options. The first place you should look is the Ontario webpage for expired licenses.
On that page you will find that depending on how long your license has been expired for, you may need to take some extra tests in order to get your license reinstated.
